Doing your thing

Updated: Jun 5, 2021

There’s always that one thing in everyone that they excel at, and also enjoy doing. ‘Your thing’ means your strength of character, and something that you do exclusively and gives everyone glimpses about yourself. For example, if someone says ‘do your thing and sort this problem out then it means you have a special skill and the potential to manage things with ease in pressure situations, that others don’t. It’s a unique quality that you possess and is your trademark.

In simple words, ‘your thing’ might be one of your hobbies, your habit, your idea, or the most common thing we know, your passion. We don’t find our passion, we work our way to our passion. We’re not going to wake up early in the morning and say ‘XYZ is my passion and I’m going to pursue it further. We discover ‘our thing’ when people praise and appreciate, giving us hints that we possess a talent. Positive responses from people make us do that thing more.

‘Your Thing’ might not always be your piece of cake every time. We might particularly fail at that thing, or be average at it firstly, but your intensity and desire for that thing won’t affect you and will push you to improve yourself drastically. This energy of beating all obstacles gets you over the line. Instead of giving up, you give your full potential in achieving the best. Even if it’s not your natural talent, your intensity allows you to make it ‘your thing’.

There are no particular reasons for you to figure out and do ‘your thing’. For many, it is their interest in a particular thing, which they enjoy doing at, and more importantly excel at too, also adding their natural talent and skills. Some people who’re bored try out new things and gradually, improve at it making it their regular hobby. For others, it’s their hard work and desire to achieve the best. It almost becomes their lives mojo to achieve this feat, and eventually, they do.

Your talent defines you and your capability, but remember, your talent isn’t you. You may lose your passion for ‘your thing’ or maybe you don’t feel you can do it anymore. Losing your talent or giving it up doesn’t change you: you’re still you. We call it our thing because we possess it, and not because it owns us. It’s not the end of the world if we lose our talent or let go of it, and as we know, there is always a second chance. We always have the choice of changing ‘our thing’ according to our situation and needs, and we can always have multiple things that we’re passionate about.

Passions aren't something that you think of overnight. These are some particular interests that take a certain period of time to develop into passions. When we finally find our passion, we ponder if the world needs such things. Many people lose their passions because of these thoughts and end up making a career in something they weren’t passionate about ever. People feel that they won’t get paid for their talents and they call it quits immediately. Some people take the brave step of continuing with their passion as a career; some are successful while some are not. If you really have it in you, then you achieve greater heights. If you’re scared about struggles you might face while pursuing it, step back immediately. There are always going to be struggles in every field.

Consistency is the key. When you have the chance to take your passion one step ahead, you probably take the opportunity. You can get paid for your passion, and most people are good at this. In the first couple of months, we perform at our level best. But after some time, we lose interest in the subject, and subsequently, our mesmerising performances fade away. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, you need to do it consistently. However promising you are in doing ‘your thing’, it won’t get highlighted until you do it consistently. You will be appreciated for your consistent good work, but as soon as you lose consistency, there is no way out. As long as you don’t do anything consistently, there is no point in doing things.

60% of the people get stuck in the phase of finding their thing, and only dream of achieving. The other 40% of people work hard to get the best out of themselves, achieving several milestones. While others may help you to find ‘your thing’, they don’t define ‘your thing’ to you. You do that. It’s always good to explore things and keep options available for yourself. At some point in time, you’ll know about ‘your thing’, and it’s your responsibility in doing ‘your thing’. Until next time, stay safe and healthy.

Adios.
